You need both plugged in for full operation. However, juice for the fan flows through the USB port. A standard controller port channels basic commands.

The sticks look like a combination of the Sony sticks and the GameCube main analog stick. (I know they are all part of the same countersunk pad, but you know what I mean.) Nyko also improved on the analog sticks, at least in design. Firstly, Nyko went with a more traditional cross-shaped D-pad instead of Sony's "four directional buttons" design. The rubber material is stiff enough to provide structural integrity, like on the Starship Enterprise, but soft enough to offer good grip. They are crosshatched to let air flow through. Those red areas are thick rubber slabs fixed in cutouts in the plastic body. New for the EX is thick, red rubber coating on the insides and outsides of the handles. However, in hand the controller is very comfortable and much lighter than you'd expect considering the amount of features. In order to pump air through the controller there had to be plenty of room inside.
If it looks a little chubby that's because it is. In terms of design, Nyko based the EX on the older model and built up. In fact, you might be genuinely impressed. I would still only recommend the Air Flo EX is you suffer from seriously sweaty paws, but at least this time you won't be let down by the performance. It's still not a perfect controller - a few small tweaks could greatly enhance the performance - but it is a big step up from its predecessor. The company hasn't announced new versions for other consoles. The new model is called the Air Flo EX and it is for the PS2. Luckily Nyko learned from its mistakes and came back with a reworked version of the pad.
